We uncover the 25 best ice cream shops, stands, and parlors in Boston and beyond.

SOC’S
Exotic flavors: raspberry cheesecake. Price: small (8 ounces), $2.73; large (14 ounces), $3.41. The scoop: The big blue roadside stand is a favorite North Shore spot for good-sized portions of ice cream — chock-full of candy, fruit, and nuts — at reasonable prices. It’s also the place to gather and catch up on neighborhood gossip on summer nights

"Saugus is the last place I would expect to find homemade lemon lavender ice cream. That seems like the sort of thing available only in Cambridge or Somerville. But alas, Soc's special ice cream flavors of the week included lemon lavender. Amazing.

The mister and I opted to share something though, so I bypassed the lemon lavender and we agreed to share a small oreo sundae with hot fudge, whipped cream, and nuts. We figured this was a true test of a new (to us, anyway) ice cream spot. And it was good! Really good.

Before we drove to Soc's, I tried to convince the mister to trek on over to JP Licks instead. He didn't want to drive that far, and now I'm glad that I didn't push the issue, because we have this fabulous place right in our backyard."
